Apparently a few literate Irish remained. A story is told of a town in Ulster, considered to be a hotbed of Orangeism, that had the following neatly lettered sign at the town entrance:

"ALL CREEDS ARE WELCOME HERE...BUT PAPISTS"

One morning, the city fathers were outraged to find that their prized sign had been defaced. Scrawled under the printed notice were the words:

"Whoever wrote it, wrote it well...The same appears on the gates of hell!"
